Get to know me
The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.
Think of a time when you were avoiding something in your life. What was it? What was holding you back? What did you do?
Think of a time when you did something in your life that was not thought through well. What was it? What urged you to do it? What happened because you did it?
Into the Bible
The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.
Read Galatians 5:22-23. The Holy Spirit isn't a wishful genie that grants us what we want but counsels us and guides us to be more like Jesus. To be more like Jesus, the Spirit reveals and reminds us what Jesus has said and done. The outcome of living in connection with the Spirit is the Fruit of the Spirit. How have you seen the fruit grow and be displayed in your life? Of the nine fruit in this passage, which one do you struggle with most? What situations should you be mindful of that God could be using to grow you?
Read Philippians 1:3-6. When Paul was Saul, he was zealous for the law to the point that he would kill those who he felt opposed it. After Jesus called him, he was willing to be killed because he believed Jesus. Paul's trials didn't make him bitter but revealed more and more how Jesus changed him. What work do you believe Jesus has started in you? What makes you think this?
Application
The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.
Read Matthew 3:13-14. Coming to see Jesus causes us to recognize that we’re sinners - unworthy - we have nothing impressive within us that could attract God’s heart. Without His hand reaching out to lift us up, we have no hope in life and death. Truly seeing the Son will cause us to repent of our sins and cast ourselves upon Him. What are some things you have seen change in your life that could only be because of Jesus?
Read Matthew 3:15. We don’t come to see Jesus to show Him all the things we’ve done well - show off our talents and prove our worth. We can only offer Jesus one thing: Our sin. And He came to take our sin, pay for it and exchange it for His righteousness. What kind of attitude should we as believers have knowing we are covered in Jesus’ righteousness? Do you see this attitude regularly displayed but yourself or other believers? How can you grow to live in a way that regularly displays an attitude that Jesus has saved you?
Read Matthew 3:16-17. Jesus' baptism is such a significant moment that each Person of the Trinity is seen. God the Son is baptized, God the Spirit descends and rests upon Him, and God the Father splits the sky to voice His approval. If the arrival of Jesus stands at the center of history, then coming to see Him stands at the center of your story. Everything in your life revolves around the day when you finally see Jesus for who He is. The climax of every human life should be coming to see Jesus. What do you believe God would be pleased about with you at this point in your life? What in His word have you been avoiding because it feels too difficult but know He's commanded it? Who can help you get started?
