Sermon Discussion Questions
Get to know me
The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.
Think of a time when you were in a situation where you were forced to consider compromising something, e.g. your integrity, friendship, or other. Describe the situation. How did you feel mentally and emotionally during this situation? Did the situation impact you spiritually? How did the situation shape you?
Into the Bible
The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.
Read James 1:2-4. Not all trials in life look the same nor do all people encounter the same ones. Describe some trials you have faced. How have they been alike or how have they been different? How did you seek God in them?
Read 1 Peter 3:13-17. How we respond during challenging situations says a lot about us. There are times where we fail and do not represent our Savior well. That's when Romans 8:1 comforts us. We also work to avoid the same mistakes twice. How has failure helped you recognize an area of your life you needed Jesus to transform? How has living through your challenges helped someone else?
Application
The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.
Read Daniel 3:1-7. Nebuchadnezzar demands worship or death. We are fortunate to be in a free society and do not have to risk death due to worship. Have you had to make decisions for or against something in order to maintain faithful worship of Jesus? What are some examples of things in your life you think you will have to think differently about or make decisions about to stay true to your witness in the next few years?
Read Daniel 3:8-18. A harsh demand was met with calmness. In a literal do or die situation, the three men did not neglect what they knew to do - love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might (Deuteronomy 6:5). What are the promises of God you trust the most? What commands of God do you struggle to be obedient to? How would you rate your obedience on a scale of one to five, one being low and five being high, and why?
Read Daniel 3:19-26. There are situations only God can take care of and we could never do. We generally call them miracles. But are we looking to God in all things, not just the super difficult? What is one thing you need to trust God with that you have a hard time letting go of?
