Sermon Discussion Questions

Get to know me

The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.

  1. Think of a time when someone - a friend, relative, or other - stepped into your life to help you. What was the outcome? How did their process of helping you actually help you or not?

Into the Bible

The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.

  1. Read John 15:1-11. Jesus explains to the disciples how He is the vine, the Father is the vinedresser, and those who believe are the branches. How does this passage in John relate to the reading in Ruth, specifically to being dependent upon God?

  2. Read Galatians 6:2. Paul is wrapping his letter up to the church in Galatia giving spiritually practical guidance. What does he mean when he says, “...and so fulfill the law of Christ”? How does Jesus work through us in situations that require us to take on the burdens of others?

Application

The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.

  1. Read Ruth 3:1-5. This seems like a strange request from Naomi to Ruth. What is going on here?

  2. Read Ruth 3:6-13. In what way would you describe Boaz’s character from his interaction with Ruth? How would you describe Ruth’s character? What does Boaz mean in verse 11 that Ruth is “a worthy woman?”

  3. Read Ruth 3:14-18. What did it mean for Boaz to give Ruth the barley? What else stands out in this section?
