Sermon Discussion Questions
Get to know me: The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.
Think back to a time leading up to a significant event in your life. What was the event and how were you feeling? Did you have control over the outcome (event) or were you reliant on others?
How has your faith been tested by events in your life?
Into the Bible: The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.
Read Luke 7:11-17. Jesus performed miracles for a purpose, not just because He could. His work was to glorify the Father. What was significant about Jesus healing the son of the widow in this passage?
Read Mark 1:40-45. There is no avoiding Jesus’ miracles of healing. He healed numerous people. What stands out in His conversation with the leper after He heals him?
Application: The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.
Read John 11:1-16. Think as one of the 12 disciples for a moment. When you first read about Jesus staying away till Lazarus dies, what comes to mind? How does Jesus' love for Lazarus, and us, seem out of the ordinary when you compare His unconditional, covenantal love to today's view of love?
Read John 11:17-27. What do we know about Martha? (see Luke 10:38-42) What might be Martha's state of mind when she runs to confront Jesus? What do her words reveal about her faith in Jesus?
Read John 11:28-37. Why does Jesus show so much compassion here knowing what He is about to do? How does this make you think about His humanity, being both 100% God and 100% human?
Read John 11:38-44. Jesus could have performed a long-distance miracle (Matt 8:5-13) but chose to be there. Why? (see verses 19 & 42) What makes this miracle standout compared to all previous miracles?
