Do You Really Know Who(se) You Are?
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” (Galatians 4:4–7 ESV)
Reflect on The Word
As men, we often define ourselves by our work, our accomplishments, or our roles as husbands/ fathers/ leaders/ etc. Yet, here in Galatians, Paul reveals a deeper, truer identity: we are sons of God, adopted into His family through the redemptive work of Christ. Through Jesus, we are no longer slaves to sin, guilt, or the pressures of the world. Instead, we are sons - beloved and cherished by our Heavenly Father. We are heirs of eternal life, peace, and relationship with God.
I’m challenged at times to rest in this truth. How about you? I know what it means and understand how it happened, but I know my sins and let them invade my mind through a whisper from the enemy. “Are you sure He loves you? Are you sure He wants you? How can you believe He would have anything to do with you?” But here’s the thing, I know Jesus’ voice from His word, and I know what the liar of all times sounds like, too.
Brothers, if Jesus Christ is your Lord and you profess His name, you are His. You are a blood-bought heir! He has made you into a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and is making you be like Him throughout your whole life (Philippians 1:6)! Sure you still have some of the old to put off, but you are more new than you think. Don’t believe the enemy’s lies or the world’s lies when they come at you.
Counsel: How can I be helped by the Word?
You are Adopted and Redeemed: You are no longer defined by your past but by your adoption as a son of God. You are a son of the Creator of all things!
“In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (Ephesians 1:5–10 ESV)
Discipleship: How can I grow from the Word?
Trust God’s Word in All Circumstances: Sometimes the trees get in the way of the forest. You face a setback or you feel left of your own and your focus turns away from God. The good news is He hasn’t turned away from you. Turn to His Word and be reminded of the truths He has given, the promises that will never be broken.
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37–39 ESV)
Encouragement: How can the word motivate me?
Being a son of God is a profound gift that redefines who we are. You are not who the world says you are, but you are a son, beloved by the Father, filled with His Spirit, and an heir to eternal life. Embrace your true identity and live in the freedom Christ has given you!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son at the perfect time to redeem me and make me Your child. I praise You that I am no longer a slave to sin but an heir of Your kingdom, with the Spirit of Your Son in my heart, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Help me to live in the freedom and joy of being Your son, and guide me to walk in Your ways with confidence and grace. Strengthen me to trust in Your promises and reflect Your love in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
