No One Knows My Pain - How Pride Hides in Suffering

H.E.A.R. Journal Example for Mark 1

Highlight

16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Explain

Jesus had been ministering in Judea for about a year before he went to Galilee. This is important because it gives us context as to his popularity or recognition as a miracle worker prior to showing up on the scene. With this as the backdrop, now think about the call of these first disciples when Jesus says come follow me and I will make you fishers of men. It wasn’t some stranger, it was Him! You can only imagine the buzz, "look it's Him, that's the guy I was telling you about!" Ultimately they really don't have a clue as to who He really is, but never the less when He said come, they came.

Apply

Unlike the first disciples in the book of Mark, we have a true understanding and revelation of who Jesus is and what He came to do. And yet, many times He stands on the shore of our life and says come follow me and we just give that blank stare like we didn’t hear a word! Not only do we hear from the true Son of God, but we know what He wants from us and yet, we struggle to move in obedience to His command. If only we could exhibit the same kind of abandoned following of those first disciples today! How many of us has prayed here I am Lord, send me. But when he calls we deploy that selective hearing we all know so well.

Respond

Prayer: Lord help me to be ready to act when you call. Help me to have my heart prepared for when you say “come follow me!”
