Sermon Discussion Questions
Get to know me:
Instructions: The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Whenever you did something embarrassing recently and experienced some shame, what kind of thoughts were going through your head? How did you move on from that?
We all seem to have a little bit of Pharisee (self-righteousness) within us. What is it that you judge in other people the most?
Into the Bible:
Instructions: The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.
Read Romans 6:5-14
What is the essence of what Paul is saying in verses 5-7?
This passage talks a lot about death. What does it mean to be “dead to sin?”
What does it look like to be “not under law but under grace?”(Verse 14)
How does this passage speak into how we should approach our sin and shame if we want to be “alive to God in Christ Jesus?”
Application:
Instructions: The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message on John 7:53-8:11.
We all judge people in different ways. How can we learn to drop the stone and begin to think about people the way Jesus does in John 8?
Jesus responds to the woman in John 8 with both grace and truth. Is it easier for you to extend grace to people or speak truth? Why do you think that is?
How can we communicate like Jesus by being grace-giving, but also speak the truth in love?
It is really easy to get stuck in parts of our past and present that bring us shame. What are some ways that we can lean into our relationship with God to overcome our shame? How can the people we do life with help with this process
