Sermon Discussion Questions
Get to know me
The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.
Think of a time or season in life when things went from good to bad. Did you stay obedient to God in that time? How did you endure during that time?
Into the Bible
The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.
Read Acts 5:27-32. Peter and the others were put in jail by the high priest but then freed at night by an angel. When they were brought back to the council, they told them they couldn't obey the council's decree because it was against their obedience to God. What are the challenges you face regularly to be obedient to God? What are some ways to overcome those challenges?
Read 2 Timothy 4:3-5. Paul is finishing his instruction to Timothy, describing what it will look like when people begin to stray from the truth of God's word. How do you notice when teaching is out of line from Scripture? How can you help yourself and others endure when the teachings of the world conflict with our obedience to God?
Application
The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.
Read Hebrews 11:8-10. Abraham was a pagan, worshiping idols. Then God enters his world. What would make Abraham believe, then follow in faith?
Read Scripture 11:11-12. Sarah wasn't fully obedient to God waiting on her promise (Hagar, Ishmael) but God was true to His word. What does this tell you about how obedience requires endurance?
Read Scripture 11:17-19. Abraham had seen God’s work directly, which is why he trusted God with what would happen with Isaac. How was Abraham's faith up to this situation like God's patience to endure the struggles of Israel until He sent Jesus?
