Sermon Discussion Questions

Get to know me

The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.

  1. Think of a time when prayer and repentance made a significant impact in your life. How did it change your perspective or behavior, and how has it continued to affect you?

  2. What are some common misconceptions about prayer and repentance? How do you address these misconceptions in your own life or in your discussions with others?

Into the Bible

The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.

  1. Read Psalm 16:11. How do Jonah’s actions conflict with the truth of Psalm 16:11?

  2. Read Matthew 16:24-25. How would you explain v24 simply and respectfully to someone who doesn’t know Jesus? How would you do the same for v25?

Application

The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.

  1. Read Jonah 2:1-6. What do Jonah’s cries say about his recognition of his sin? How does the despair of sin motivate the confession of sin?

  2. Read Jonah 2:7-8. What does Jonah realize that we see from his prayer?

Read Jonah 2:9-10. What was the only thing Jonah can do to be relieved from the circumstance he was in?
