What is Baptism?
Baptism is an outward symbol that a person has entered into a
relationship with Jesus Christ. It symbolizes what has taken place
inwardly at the time of our salvation: our acceptance of Jesus Christ
as Lord and Savior.
It can also be described as:
- Our sharing in His death and resurrection illustrated by going
under the water, dead to our old life, then rising again in new life.
- Our being symbolically washed clean, our sins being forgiven by His death on the cross.
Simply, we are to be baptized as Christ-followers because Jesus was
baptized. Jesus was baptized to announce to the world the beginning of
His public ministry. For us, it is the opportunity to share with the
world that we know follow Christ. Furthermore, baptism is the first and
crucial step of obedience in a new and growing relationship with God.
Scripture passages related to baptism…
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we
have been unified with him like this in his death, we will certainly
also be untied with him in his resurrection.”
Romans 6:3-5
“Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture that told him
the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came
to some water and a eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I
be baptized?” Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you
may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of
God.”
